Parents Night Out

Pastor Sam's first time changing a diaper! But this wasn't all the fun that we had. The college students (and Melanie) had a wonderful time watching children last Friday night while the children's parents had a good time on a date. The pictures are here. The activities we participated in included coloring, pizza, playing on the playground and watching a movie. We also drew out different things that were created on the six days of creation in sidewalk chalk. Over all, we had a great time and we are looking forward to our next ministry project for June - coming soon.

GoodSearch

GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

What if our church earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Well, now we can!

GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it's powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter First Southern Baptist Church as the charity you want to support. Just 100 of us searching twice a day will raise about $730 in a year without anyone spending a dime! And, be sure to spread the word!

June 2007

Grace and Peace to you all, it is time for fun in the sun! That’s right summer is finally here and we have some great events coming up for our students to get involved in this summer. Please note the changes for Wednesday’s times for our youth and children. We are having our annual Lock-In (School’s Out Blow Out), TeamKids Kickoff, and VBS.
I would also like to take a moment to highlight Noah’s Park, our children church ministry to three year old to five year olds. On May 13 and April 22 we have seen as many as 15 children in this program. During out time down stairs we have several different sessions: Snack, Craft, Games, Music, Puppet Show, Bible Verse Memorization, and Bible Time. We are always in need of more workers. We are current on a one month rotation, and we are looking to move to a two month rotation. Please contact Dawn Barclay or me, if you would like to work in this growing ministry!
First of all we have our annual Lock-In (School’s Out Blow Out) June 7th to June 8th; the time is 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. We will begin the night with a mystery event, where we will travel over to Louisville. You will need to dress in clothing that you can climb in or run in, tennis shoes recommended. Please bring $20 cash with you to pay for our first event. We will then return to the church for food, Bible time, a movie, and other fun group games. And there is even a roomer that there will be a Nintendo Wii! So come on out and bring your friends!
Second I want to remind everyone about TeamKid, which will be offered for our kids from first Grade to fifth. In this exciting study we will have games, mission’s education, and Bible Study. Each session is broken into the get-involved activity, group study, mission’s emphasis time, Bible Verse Memory Time, games and activities, and the cool down.
And finally what I am most excited about VBS 2007. We will be seeing this event kicked off on June 18-22. This event is very close to my heart, because it was during VBS that I was saved by Jesus Christ. So just think, we are going to be the first Bible training that many young ministers will have. Isn’t that wonderful! Come and be apart of this very important community outreach. We will be drawing to see who will win the giant Gameday Central Football w/kickstand.
So friends there are many opportunities to serve and teach the word of God this summer. Don’t let warmer weather think that it is time to be lazy, come and make a different in the life of a child. Because when you touch the life of a child, you are getting at the very heart of God!

In Christ,

Travis Tyler

Get Uncomfortable - Session One

Hey College Students! Ok, they shipped us the wrong member books. But don't fret, they overnighted the right ones to us and we are set. I will be creating a mailing list for the members of the study. When you send me an email letting me know that you want to sign up for the study, I will add you to the list. We will maintain communication through this site and the email list.

I just read over Session One, and I am both encouraged by the quality of the material and challenged by its message. I can't wait for you all to get involved. Speaking of getting involved, I will also email you the audio clip for Session One. Before each session, I will give you an mp3 that you can listen to on your computer or put on your iPod and listen on the go. This first one is a discussion of social injustice and what the church is, or isn't, doing about it. Make sure you listen to this before the study. Grace and Peace.

Session One will begin Sunday, June 3rd. Free food at 5:30pm followed by worship and Session One.

Another Success Story - Drive-In Movie Night

The college ministry's Drive-In Movie Night was fun. We had twelve show up, ten stay through the first movie - Cars - and seven stay through the second movie - The Princess Bride. Even the police made an appearance - don't worry, just patrolling, which I'm thankful for. Here are the photos. This will have to be an anual event at least. What should we watch at the next one? Make comments below by clicking "comments."

June College Bible Study

Beginning June 3rd, the College Ministry will begin a new Bible study from threads media. This is a six week Bible study entitled "Get Uncomfortable." This study was one recommended by our Pastor. He actually blogs for them now!

This study will guide you to examine the character of God, explore the true condition of the world, uncover misconceptions about poverty, and learn how to use the power of the Holy Spirit. By offering practical ways to make that impact and providing a biblical link between evangelism and social action, you will begin to understand what God wants His followers to do for “the least of these.”

We already have the books. We ask that you, if you have the money, give $8.00 to cover the cost of the book. If things are tight don't worry about it.

Sign up and be challenged. Contact Brian for more details.

Drive-In Movie Night

This Sunday Night, May 13th (Mother's Day), the college students will be having a Drive-In Movie Night. Regular services are canceled for that evening, so come join in the fun as we watch Cars and The Princess Bride. We will have the big projector screen set up near the new picnic pavilion so we can back our trucks up to watch a couple great flicks. Popcorn, candy and sweet tea will be provided.

Just don't forget to kiss your mom before you come.

Spaghetti Dinner a Hit

The Spaghetti Dinner went off well the 6th of May. The proceeds will go to help fund the mission trip to Charleston, South Carolina.
